چکیده

The paper proposes a new simulator that supports UMTS and Enhanced-UMTS performance evaluation. Existing UMTS simulators integrate linklevel and system-level simulators, implemented using time-based simulation techniques. The proposed simulator integrates time-based link level simulations into an event-based system level simulator by extending ns-2. The simulator can evaluate parameters associated with UMTS or EnhancedUMTS performance (delay, loss, jitter, throughput), to assess the impact of new services, protocols and architectures. Performance evaluation does not only capture the performance over the air interface but also investigates the influence of the all-IP network in the overall system behaviour. A scenario modelling a demanding traffic-mix in a business city centre environment is evaluated and results are presented.

The Use of NS-2 Simulator in Studying UMTS Performances

Abstract – Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is a third-generation mobile communications system that supports high bit rate wireless multimedia applications. In addition to UMTS, HSDPA-based UMTS networks improve the initial UMTS networks in terms of radio resource allocation and data transfer performances. Due to the complexity of such system and difficulty of access to the real...

Performance Evaluation of TCP Variants over UMTS Networks

With the evolution of 3G technologies like Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), the usage of TCP has become more popular for a reliable end-to-end (e2e) data delivery. However, TCP was initially designed for wired networks and therefore it suffers performance degradation due to the radio signal getting affected by fading, shadowing and interference. There are many strategies propos...

Analysis of packet scheduling for UMTS EUL - design decisions and performance evaluation

The UMTS Enhanced Uplink (EUL) provides higher capacity, increased data rates and smaller latency on the communication link from users towards the network. In this paper we present a performance comparison of three distinct EUL scheduling schemes (one-by-one, partial parallel and full parallel) taking into account both the packet level characteristics and the flow level dynamics due to the (ran...

A Dual Mode Mobile Terminal for Enhanced Performance of Data Services in NGN Networks

To provide seamless internet connectivity anywhere at any time to the mobile users, there is a strong demand for the integration of wireless access networks for all-IP based Next Generation Networks (NGNs). To support heterogeneous networking environment, a dual mode user terminal is required to support all access networks which are gathered to build the integrated unified network. Several rese...
